FIRST Tech Challenge (FtC) at VCS Robotics

What is FTC?

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is an international robotics competition designed for students in grades 7–12, offering a comprehensive STEM experience that extends beyond the classroom. Each season, teams of up to 15 members collaborate to design, build, and program robots that compete in head-to-head matches on a 12′ x 12′ field.

FTC is more than just a robotics competition; it’s a platform that fosters innovation, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving. Guided by adult mentors, students engage in the full engineering process—from brainstorming and designing to programming and testing their robots. The competition emphasizes not only technical skills but also community outreach, team branding, and strategic thinking.

Season Structure

The FTC season kicks off each September with the release of a new game challenge. Teams then have several months to develop their robots and strategies before participating in local and regional qualifiers. Successful teams advance to state championships and potentially to the prestigious FIRST Championship, where they compete against top teams from around the world.

Skills and Impact

Participation in FTC equips students with a range of valuable skills, including:

  • STEM Proficiency: Hands-on experience in engineering, coding, and electronics.

  • Teamwork: Collaborative problem-solving and project management.

  • Communication: Public speaking, technical writing, and outreach.

  • Innovation: Creative thinking and adaptability in dynamic challenges.

These experiences have a lasting impact, with many alumni pursuing careers in engineering, computer science, and related fields.

Get Involved

FTC welcomes students of all skill levels, as well as adult mentors who can guide and inspire the next generation of innovators. Whether you’re interested in starting a team, volunteering, or sponsoring, there are numerous ways to get involved and make a difference.
